Her lunar goddess aspect of her is sometimes evoked by the moon and the stars surrounding her head. She wears here a tunic turned up to the knee in order to facilitate her running. This statue, placed in the center of the hall built for Henry II, is a romantic allusion to the king's favorite, Diana of Poitiers. Artemis (in ancient Greek: ??teµ??, Ártemis), in the religion of ancient Greece, is the goddess of hunting, wild animals, archery, forest and cultivated fields; she is also the goddess of female initiations, protector of virginity and modesty. She daughter of Zeus and Leto and twin sister of Apollo, she is one of the twelve Olympians and her origin goes back to the most ancient times. She was later identified as the personification of the waxing moon, along with Selene (the full moon) and Hecate (the waning moon). Together with Athena and Estia, she was a virgin goddess, armed with a golden bow and arrows, she dwelt in the woods with her reliable hunting dogs and a host of nymphs. In Rome she was associated with the figure of Diana, while the Etruscans revered her with the name of Artume.
