biography.
Edo Murtić (1921 – 2005) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb with Professor Ljubo Babić. He later moved to Belgrade to attend the Petar Dobrović School of Art.
During World War II, he became involved as a partisan in the anti-fascist resistance. During this time he made numerous drawings of high documentary and artistic value.
Between 1951 and 1952, Murtić traveled to the United States, where he met Jackson Pollock, de Kooning, Richard Diebenkorn, James Brooks and other American artists. During that period he created the “Experience of America” cycle.
In 1958 he participated in the XXIX Venice Biennale and the Kassel Documenta.
In 1960, Murtić received the Marzotto Prize and the Gold Medal of the Italian President at the Premio di Pittura Città di Faenza.
The artist participated in the 7th Tokyo Biennial in 1965 and in the IX São Paulo Biennial in 1967.
In 1972, Edo Murtić received the Silver Plate from Pope John VI in Rome. He also received the Premio Internazionale di Grafica Do Forni and the Medal of the Mayor of Venice.
The French Ministry of Culture awarded him the title of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters.
“The energetic gesture, powerful colorism, and overall vitality of the 'American Experience' cycle heralded an aesthetic paradigm that Murtić would develop during the 1960s in monumental abstract compositions in his characteristic idiom. In the 1950s, his style was closer to informal art and tachism, the European variants of abstract expressionism. It was precisely this type of painting, rich in pictorial dynamism, that gave him his first success abroad and established him as an artist of international relevance.” – Branko Franceschi

– Branko Franceschi
