Oil on canvas. On the back of the frame there is an autographed pencil writing with the improper indication 'Copia da Domenichino', and an undeciphered signature. It is actually a copy of the painting created by Simon Vouet (1590-1649) in 1624, and today preserved in the National Gallery in Prague. Furthermore, during his period of stay in Italy, Vouet looked a lot at the painting of Domenichino and that of Guido Reni, whose influence he was influenced by. The episode depicted tells of the suicide of Lucrezia, wife of the Roman noble Tarquinius Collatinus who, kidnapped by Sextus Tarquinius preferred death to dishonor. Vouet's canvas is of great pictorial and chromatic intensity, which is well reproduced here, as the unknown artist knew how to highlight both the female figure in her dramatic movement and the richness of the furnishings and surrounding fabrics. The painting shows traces of restoration and a tear in the upper center. It is presented in a gilded frame from the early 1900s.
