Mid 19th Century Grandfather Clock in Lyre Shape
Sweden
Birch
Circa 1850
Dimensions: H x W x D: 218 x 60 x 21 cm
:
Unusual Swedish grandfather clock from the mid-19th century in the shape of a lyre.
The solid birch case stands on a wide plinth and tapers upwards in curved lines.
Based on this, we see the lyre-shaped centre section with a viewing window door. Behind the glazing, which consists of two panes set against each other, the perpetual spectacle of the moving pendulum and the weights lowering over the course of a week can be observed.
The round head of the clock opens to the front. Behind the curved glass pane, we see the dial painted in muted white with black hands and numerals. The signature of the clockmaker CARLSTRÖM can be found above the VI.
The movement is a typical Swedish piece with a gear train mounted between iron plates. It strikes every hour on a gong.
There is a written list of previous owners with corresponding years and a written history of the clock.
Condition:
The case has been technically repaired and cleaned with spirit. Traces of use and wear were deliberately retained and preserved with shellac. We now see a grandfather clock with a wonderfully authentic patina and birch wood that has darkened over the decades.
The movement was dismantled and completely overhauled. The clock runs absolutely reliably.
